Velma Jean Stone, 95, of Shelbyville

Velma Jean Stone, 95, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.

She was born January 13, 1928, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Merrill and Dorothy (McPherson) Fields.  On February 18, 1949, she married Chester Irvin Stone, and he preceded her in death on April 8, 2015.

Velma is survived by her daughters, Cynthia “Cyd” Kladden of Indianapolis, Cheryl “Sherry” Stone and husband, Greg Hudson, of Shelbyville,  and Aimee A. Shoopman and husband, Scott, of Georgetown, Texas; sister-in-law, Elise Fields, of Indianapolis; sister, Sue Walters and husband, John, of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Zak and wife, Alicia, Kerry, Erin and husband, Josh, Kaitlan and husband, Trevor, Dan, and Brooke and husband, Shane; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Chester, Velma was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Christy Sue Stone; and brother, Larry Fields .

Velma graduated in 1946 from Tech High School.

She was a member of the Woodside Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

Velma was a true animal lover and rescued many pets through the years.

She formerly worked in the retail market and was a secretary in an insurance office.

Velma enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

Visitation will be from 10 am to Noon, Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will follow at Noon on Tuesday.

Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
