Mary Margaret Smith, 87, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023, at Maple Park Village in Westfield.

She was born May 2, 1936, in Brown County, the daughter of Edwin and Elva Nancy (Carpenter) Butler. On October 9, 1954, she married Avery Smith, and he preceded her in death on August 27, 1985.

Mary is survived by her sons, Avery Smith Jr. and wife, Teresa, and Gregory Smith and wife, Sherry, both of Shelbyville; daughter, Nancy Murray and husband, Gary, of Noblesville; grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Robbie Beals, Taniel Harper and Collin Hewitt; great-grandchildren, Chelsea McKillop, Payton McKillop, Mallory McKillop, Addilyn Kerns, Allen Kerns and Emersyn Hewitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Avery, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lori Sue Beals; grandson, Michael McKillop; and great-grandchild, Ayden Harper; brothers, Evans Butler, Dale Butler and Harley Butler.

Mary formerly worked as a nurses’ aide at Major Hospital for over 10 years.

She loved to spend time with her family.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 am, Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am, Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
