Sammie "Sam" Burton, 87, of Morristown

Sammie “Sam” Burton, 87, of Morristown, passed away, Friday, October 20, 2023, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

He was born October 22, 1935, in Columbia, Kentucky, the son of Clyde and Florence (Pendleton) Burton.  On July 16, 1957, he married his wife of 66 years, Mildred “Helen” Stone, and she survives. They made their home in Morristown for the last 50 years.

In addition to Helen, Sam is survived by his sons, Darrell Burton and partner, Pam Meredith, of Freeport, and Gary Burton and wife, Karen, of Shelbyville; brothers, J. R. Burton and wife, Paula, of Greenfield, and Dennis Burton and wife, Misty, of Anderson; sisters, Iretha Lyons of Greenwood, and Debbie Martin and husband, Chris, of Fountaintown; grandchildren, Jennifer Burton, Samuel Burton and wife, Caroline, Angel Pattison and husband, Ian, Emily Taylor and husband, John, Kyle Burton, Amber Ward and husband, Jon; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Cameron, Lucas, Millie, Noah, Mina, Jalen and Meredith; great-great-granddaughter, Elliana; several step-brothers and step-sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; uncle and role model while growing up, Willie Burton;  twin daughters, Mildred Mae and Sandra Faye Burton; brothers, Bobby Burton (twin), James Burton and Eugene Burton; sisters, Liz Johnson, Myrtle Sheats and Bernice Burton; and grandson, Luke Burton.

He was a member of the Morristown Christian Church for over 40 years.

Sam formerly served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

He retired in 1997, from Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 30 years.  Sam was a machine and fork lift operator.  He loved farming, fishing, hunting and spending time with friends and family.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.

Funeral services will be at 10 am, Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the funeral home, with Pastor Fred Hickman officiating.

Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
