Five local athletes advance out of Shelbyville track sectional

A trio of Golden Bears and a pair of Tigers advanced Tuesday out of the Shelbyville Girls Track and Field Sectional.

The top three finishers in each event automatically qualified for regional competition.

Megan Eads, a senior from Shelbyville, finished second in the long jump with a best leap of 15 feet, 9.5 inches. Warren Central's Laila Smith won the event at 17-0.5 and her teammate, Jila Vaden, placed third (15-8.75).

Shelbyville junior Stefanie Howard finished third in the 1,600 in five minutes, 41.89 seconds. Greenfield-Central's Audrey Brinkruff was first in 5:26.01 and Franklin Central's Kylie Cline was runner-up in 5:37.37.

Shelbyville senior Malea Terrell and Triton Central sophomore Maddy Brown finished tied for third in the high jump, allowing both to advance to next week's regional competition. Both cleared 4-6, 4-8 and 4-10 on their first attempts and missed all three attempts at 5-0.

Warren Central's Tacoria Humphrey won the high jump at 5-8. Warren Central's Ramiyah Smith was second at 5-0.

Triton Central senior Alyssa Lewis earned another week of competition with a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles (49.63). Warren Central's Laila Smith won the event in 47.4. Lutheran's Katie McKinley was second at 48.61.

Morristown's 3,200 relay team produced a special moment with a fourth-place finish. Raegan Kleine, Gracie Laster, Maggie Lutes and Rylee Kleine crossed the finish line in a school record 10:42.59.

That bested the record set by Rachel Nolen (Raegan and Rylee Kleine's mother), Shari Nolen (aunt to Raegan and Rylee Kleine), Brittany Griffin and Sarah Milli.

Regional qualifiers from sectionals at Connersville, East Central, Franklin and Shelbyville will compete May 25 at Franklin High School.

Athletes outside the top three could be added to the regional field if regional qualifiers choose to scratch in events.
