IHSAA releases new sectional assignments for football, basketball, soccer and volleyball

Shelbyville athletics is on the sectional move once again in football, basketball and volleyball.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Executive Committee approved the sectional assignments Tuesday in six team sports for the next two school years.

The Executive Committee accepted the recommendations of the respective realignment committees which determined the sectional groups for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.

Football

Shelbyville football moves to Class 4A, Sectional 23 and is grouped with Bedford North Lawrence, East Central, Edgewood, Greenwood, Jennings County, Martinsville and Silver Creek.

Sectional 22 features five Hoosier Heritage Conference schools – Greenfield-Central, Pendleton Heights, Mt. Vernon, New Castle and New Palestine. The other three schools are Beech Grove, Connersville and Richmond.

Triton Central football finds itself still looking south for sectional competition but an Indiana Crossroads Conference rival is joining Class 2A, Sectional 39.

Triton Central and Scecina are grouped with Brown County, Brownstown Central, Christel House, Clarksville, Eastern (Pekin) and Switzerland County in Sectional 39.

Basketball

Shelbyville basketball, both boys and girls, is looking at a mix of its last two sectional groupings in Class 4A.

Sectional 14 now includes Columbus East, Columbus North, East Central, Franklin, Shelbyville and Whiteland.

Class 2A, Sectional 42 has five teams – Eastern Hancock, Scecina, Irvington Prep, Riverside and Triton Central.

Class A, Sectional 60 is loaded with teams with deep rivalries. The seven-team sectional now includes Edinburgh, Jac-Cen-Del, Morristown, Oldenburg Academy, South Decatur, Southwestern and Waldron.

Morristown and Southwestern soccer will not compete in the same sectional.

Morristown is assigned to Class A, Sectional 44 with Knightstown, Oldenburg Academy, Seton Catholic, Union County and Wapahani.

Southwestern is in Sectional 42 with Central Christian Academy, Hauser, Lutheran, Indiana Math & Science, Irvington Prep, Victory College Prep and Waldron – who has not fielded a team in recent years.

Girls Soccer

Shelbyville is in Class 3A – the state’s largest classification – with East Central, Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine and Richmond.

In Class A, Sectional 44, Triton Central is grouped with Knightstown, Morristown, Muncie Burris, Union County and Wapahani. Morristown has not fielded a girls’ soccer team in several years.

Volleyball

Shelby County’s five volleyball programs’ sectional assignments are identical to the boys basketball groupings.

Shelbyville will compete against Columbus East, Columbus North, East Central, Franklin and Whiteland.

Triton Central is with Eastern Hancock, Scecina, Irvington Prep and Riverside.

Morristown, Southwestern and Waldron are in the seven-team sectional with Edinburgh, Jac-Cen-Del, Oldenburg Academy and South Decatur.

Three committees consisting of school administrators representing each IHSAA district and class were constructed to realign the sports.

The football committee totaled 18 administrators, the basketball and volleyball committee was made up of 12 members and the soccer committee consisted of nine individuals.

The baseball and softball realignment committee will meet this summer after both state tournaments conclude in June with their sectional recommendations being presented to the Executive Committee for approval at its August meeting.

Host sites for the next two years will be determined by administrators in each sectional this summer.
