Collegiate Update: Weaver helps Valparaiso collect MVC series win against Evansville

Addisenn Weaver had three hits in a pair of Valparaiso softball wins that closed out the regular-season schedule.

Valparaiso defeated Evansville Saturday in the three-game series opener, 5-1. Weaver, a Shelbyville graduate, had two hits.

Evansville rebounded for a 2-1 victory in the second Missouri Valley Conference game Saturday.

On Sunday, Valparaiso ended the series with a 10-0 victory. Weaver went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Beacons, 14-32 this season (5-22 MVC), open the MVC Tournament today in Springfield, Missouri, against Indiana State.

Katie Mathies

The Shelbyville graduate went 1-for-2 Saturday for DePauw in a 7-6 loss to Wooster in the North Coast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament in Greencastle, Indiana.

The Tigers rebounded to defeat Denison, 11-2, Friday. Mathies had two hits.

The Tigers followed that with a 5-0- win Saturday over Wooster and a 5-3 win over Hiram before losing to Hiram, 5-2. Mathies had a double in the loss.

DePauw will host a NCAA Division III double-elimination regional starting Friday.

The Tigers (34-9) will face Berry (29-11) in their opener. Piedmont (31-9) takes on Hiram (24-14), the NCAC Tournament champion, in the other tournament opener.

 

 

Erica Henry

The Shelbyville graduate took the loss for Olney Central College on May 4 at Lincoln Trail College.

Olney lost 8-5. Henry pitched into the sixth inning, allowing seven hits and eight runs (only three were earned).

 

 

Hannah File

The Shelbyville graduate had a walk and was hit by a pitch and scored a run on May 4 in Louisville’s 12-3 win at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Louisville opens the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament today against Syracuse.

 

 

Zaleeya Martin

The Shelbyville graduate finished fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.71 seconds) for Hanover College Friday in the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana University.

 

 

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate placed 25th in the discus (26.48 meters) for St. Francis (Ind.) at the Crossroads League Championship held at the University of Notre Dame.

 

 

Layton Stieneker

The Shelbyville graduate lost a pair of matches for Franklin College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal round loss to Transylvania, 8-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Stieneker and Owen Pickerell were defeated by Jared Wells and Jacob Cooper, 8-4.

At No. 6 singles, Stieneker lost to Ty Crabtree, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Franklin finished the season with a 9-8 record – the program’s first season above .500 since 2014-2015.
