Triton Central enters Shelbyville Tennis Sectional unbeaten against the field

Inclement weather Wednesday altered the schedule for the IHSAA girls tennis sectional at Shelbyville High School.

The opening round match between Morristown (0-13) and Southwestern (2-12) will be played at 5 p.m. today. The winner advances to a Friday semifinal round match against Triton Central (15-3).

The other semifinal Friday pits the host Golden Bears (10-11) and Waldron (7-8).

The championship match is now scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

Triton Central is the favorite, going 7-0 against potential sectional opponents this season. The Tigers, winners of the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship, have won 10 straight matches.

With a pair of strong doubles teams, Triton Central also boasts the two players with the most wins this season at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles.

Julia Sanders is 11-3 at No. 1 singles and Lelia Chougule is 13-1 at No. 3 singles. Emma Hutchinson is 10-3 at No. 2 singles.

Kelsey McGuire and Alyssa Wheatley are 12-6 at No. 1 doubles. Olivia Martin and Sarah Williams are 11-2 at No. 2 doubles.

If Southwestern defeats Morristown for a second time this season, Martin and Williams will be challenged by McKinley Correll and Faith Kelley (13-3), who won the Mid-Hoosier Conference Tournament Saturday at Hauser.

Shelbyville scored a 3-2 win over Waldron on April 20.

The Golden Bears were victorious at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.

Ella Connolly needed three sets to defeat Riley Price at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.

In their first meeting, Emma Sandman defeated Josee Larrison at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Larrison is 9-6 this season but has momentum after winning the MHC Tournament Saturday.

Waldron’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Mackenzie Shaw and Megan Bogemann are 15-0 this season. The duo won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, in their first meeting with Shelbyville’s Karlie Lawson and Renee Aldridge.

Shelbyville’s No. 2 doubles team of Riley Lee and Sydney Baker defeated Waldron’s Audrey Hogg and Emily Tyree, 6-4, 7-5.

And Nichole Garner defeated Jaidyn Tackett, 6-4, 6-2 in that first meeting at No. 1 singles.

The Shelbyville Sectional championship team advances to Tuesday’s Center Grove Regional semifinal round to face the winner of the Southport Sectional that includes Southport, Indianapolis Shortridge, Perry Meridian, Decatur Central and Scecina.

The other semifinal Tuesday pits the Center Grove Sectional champion against the Franklin Central Sectional champion.

The regional championship match is Wednesday.

In addition, any No. 1 singles or No. 1 doubles team from a non-advancing sectional team that does not lose a match in the sectional advances to the state singles and doubles tournament sectional round, also played at Center Grove next week.
