Two newcomers lead Shelbyville to season-opening win at Hauser

A transfer and a freshman helped Shelbyville dominate Hauser Wednesday in a season-opening 17-1 victory in Hope.

Eli Sheppard, a junior transfer from Waldron, had three hits and drove in six runs to lead the Shelbyville offensive attack.

Freshman Aiden Smith pitched four scoreless innings and struck out nine in his high school debut.

The Golden Bears scored five runs in the top of the first inning and extended the lead to 8-0 after two innings. A nine-run third put the game out of reach.

Brock Kuhn had two hits and scored four runs for Shelbyville, who had just seven hits total against the Jets but took advantage of 14 walks and three players hit by a pitch.

Owen McIntyre took the loss for the Jets, allowing the first eight runs of the contest. Zayne McCanlis and Sam Louden also saw time on the mound.

Hauser’s four hits in the loss came from Holden Pittman and Stryker Gill.

The Golden Bears host East Central Friday for their home opener at Barnett Field.
