Prep Report: Fast start propels Southwestern baseball to season-opening win over Eminence

Isaac Bunch and Owen Garner each had three hits and each drove in three runs to lead Southwestern baseball to a season-opening 14-4 victory Monday over Eminence.

Matthew Clements pitched three shutout innings and struck out seven which allowed the Spartans to build a 9-0 lead.

James Oliver and Caleb McCracken combined to strike out five Eels over the final two innings to secure the victory.

Clements and Kaden Barlow each had two hits.

Trevyn Burnett took the loss for Eminence (0-1), allowing six hits, five walks and nine runs in two innings of work.

Southwestern travels to Jac-Cen-Del (0-1) today.

Baseball

Rising Sun 10, Waldron 0

At Rising Sun, the host Shiners (1-0) scored four times in the third and fourth innings to pull away for the season-opening win.

Waldron had two hits over five innings in the loss.

Jacob Bennett pitched two scoreless innings before getting touched up in the third and allowing four runs. He allowed six hits and four runs while striking out three before turning the pitching duties over to Jacob Lindsey.

Payton Creech led Rising Sun with three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs. Aiden White also had three hits and three RBIs.

Waldron hosts Oldenburg Academy today.

Morristown 11, Tri 10

At Morristown, the host Yellow Jackets trailed 7-0 before rallying to score five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. And after holding the Titans scoreless in the top of the seventh, pushed a run across in the bottom half of the inning to secure their first win of the season.

Tri (0-1) scored five runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Kyler Engle had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Tri offensive attack. Sam Mondrush also had two hits and scored two runs.

Three Tri pitchers allowed 10 hits and five walks despite racking up 15 strikeouts.

Morristown (1-1) hosts Indy Genesis today.

Softball

Eminence 20, Southwestern 7

At Eminence, the Eels (1-2) collected their first victory of the season with a strong offensive performance that was aided by 16 walks.

Trailing 14-0 after two innings, the Spartans, playing their first high school softball game in five years, scored seven times in the top of the third inning.

Southwestern’s home opener is Thursday against South Decatur.

Girls tennis

Shelbyville 5, Edinburgh 0

At Edinburgh, the visiting Golden Bears dominated in four of the five matches and Joslyn Jersan pulled out a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to lead Shelbyville to a season-opening win.

Jersan prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Emma Sandman was victorious at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Renee Aldridge delivered a No. 2 singles win, 7-5, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Karlie Lawson and Sophia Asher collected a 6-0, 6-3 victory. And Riley Lee and Sydney Baker did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.

Shelbyville travels to Morristown Thursday.

Lutheran 3, Southwestern 2

At Southwestern, the visiting Saints won both doubles matches and added a victory at No. 1 singles to secure the win over the Spartans.

Southwestern’s McKinley Correll defeated Ella Weigand, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Ella Rice added a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Lutheran’s Cat Urwin topped Southwestern’s Lauryn Blondell, 6-1, 6-2.

Mackenzie Belton and Tori Burkhart lost at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-1. And Taryn Hoeing and Kate Coffman were swept, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Southwestern hosts Knightstown Wednesday.
