Shelbyville didn't have to look far to find its new head football coach

Scott Fitzgerald is more than just a little familiar with the sideline at McKeand Stadium.

Fitzgerald served several seasons as the Golden Bears offensive coordinator for then-head coach Pat Parks. Now, he returns as the program's head coach with the approval of the Shelbyville Central Schools Board at a special meeting held Wednesday evening.

Fitzgerald fills the vacancy left by Brian Glesing. Glesing accepted the head football position at Salem after two years in Shelbyville and a 2-15 record.

Since departing the high school program following the 2017 season Fitzgerald has worked with the youngsters growing up in the Shelbyville elementary and middle school grades, including his own sons. The Shelbyville Middle School teacher also worked as a wide receivers coach for his alma mater, Franklin College.

Fitzgerald expressed his thanks to Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance, the school board, SHS Athletic Director Jenny Demuth-Hensley and Principal Amy Dawson.

He spoke with GIANT fm Sports and The Shelby County Post Wednesday night about accepting the job, the program's current status and some familiar faces that will join him coaching the Golden Bears.

Dr. Matt Vance talked about the process that ended with the hiring of Fitzgerald.
