Sandman honored with Paul Cross Award

Shelbyville High School’s boys basketball program closed out the 2022-2023 season with an awards banquet Monday.

Senior Ollie Sandman (photo) was the recipient of the Rotary/Paul Cross Award. He shared the award after the 2022 season with then-senior Jakob Heaton.

Golden Bears head coach John Hartnett presented Sandman, who will play basketball collegiately at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, with a commemorative basketball in recognition of him becoming the 10th 1,000-point scorer in program history.

Sandman closed out his career as Shelbyville’s eighth all-time leading scorer and he holds the record for career 3-point field goals made.

Other varsity awards presented Monday were:

  • Leader in 3-point field goal percentage: Ollie Sandman
  • Leading rebounder: Ethan Lambert
  • Leader in free throw percentage and charge leader: Caden Claxton
  • Assists leader and Outstanding Defensive Player: Jackson Parker
  • Steals leader: Luke Brinkman
  • Guts Award: Aiden Asher
  • Golden Bear Award: Riley Fortune
  • Most Improved: Damon Badgley

Brody Runnebohm was presented with the junior varsity Most Valuable Player award.

Kohen Myers received the JV Captain’s Award.

Logan Reinhart was named “C” team MVP.

The “C” team’s Captain’s Award was presented to Kenny Owens.

All varsity, junior varsity and “C” team players were recognized with letters or certificates.

The varsity team finished the season with a 10-14 record. The JV team finished 13-9 while the “C” team went 6-9.
