Prep Report: Shelbyville baseball collects win over Yellow Jackets

Shelbyville baseball scored four runs in the top of the first inning against Morristown ace Grant Kessler and turned it into an 8-1 victory Thursday.

The Golden Bears (3-5) scored single runs in the second and third innings and added two more in the fourth to secure the win.

Aiden Smith and Gavyn Fisher each had two hits, both doubles, for Shelbyville. The duo combined to drive in five of the Golden Bears’ eight runs.

Kessler, a left-hander committed to Mount St. Joseph University, pitched into the seventh inning and collected 14 strikeouts. Only three of the eight runs allowed were earned.

Dalton Jones earned the win for Shelbyville. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven over four innings of work. McKayne Wickham and Caden Tackett combined to toss three scoreless innings.

Bryce Bryant led Morristown (3-2) with two hits.

Shelbyville hosts Indian Creek (3-2) Saturday at Barnett Field. Morristown hosts Indianapolis Lutheran (3-2) Saturday.

Baseball

Waldron 14, Southwestern 0

At Southwestern, Jacob Bennett pitched six scoreless innings to lead Waldron (2-5, 1-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference) to its first win over the Spartans since 2015.

Bennett’s complete-game shutout was the first for the Mohawks since the 2021 season. He had 11 strikeouts.

Bennett also had a pair of hits against Southwestern (2-4, 0-3 MHC) as did Jared Brooks.

The two teams will play again tonight at Waldron.

Boys golf

Franklin 157, Shelbyville 187

At The Legends Golf Club, Jake Lock shot a career-low round of 34 to lead the Grizzlies to the team victory.

Franklin got 41s from Kadin Gibson, Luke Bechert and Kyle Diebold.

Eli Baker led Shelbyville with a 42. Jake Garrison followed at 43. Completing the Golden Bears’ scorecard were Brock Wischmeyer (47) and Cruz Nedderman (55).

Edinburgh 178, Southwestern 255

At Timbergate Golf Course, Edinburgh’s Max Blandford led the field with a three-over par round of 39.

Also for Edinburgh, Devyn Milburn shot 45, Gabe Bennett finished at 46 and Mason Calhoun shot 48.

Eli Smith led Southwestern with a 57.

Softball

Triton Central 10, Heritage Christian 0

At Triton Central, Lillian Fillippinie pitched a five-inning no-hitter and had 11 strikeouts to push TC’s record to 5-1.

Jayda McKee, Hailey Harris, Jalynn Keith and Brooklyn Adkins each had two hits to lead the Tigers. Harris had three runs batted in.

Triton Central hosts Edinburgh (3-5) Monday.

Morristown 16, Irvington Prep 5

At Irvington, the visiting Yellow Jackets scored in every inning to improve to 2-3 this season.

Brandi Enterkin led Morristown with four hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Nevaeh Cox had three hits, four runs and three RBIs. And Alexia Rogers had three hits and three RBIs.

Rhylee Coppage earned the win for Morristown, allowing six hits and five walks while striking out three in four innings. Rogers pitched a scoreless two innings in relief.

Kris Miller and Haley Johnson each had two hits for Irvington Prep (0-2).

Morristown hosts Oldenburg Academy (1-6) Saturday.

Waldron 18, Southwestern 4

At Southwestern, the visiting Mohawks used a 12-run first inning to roll to the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

Bre Barton drove in four runs for Waldron (1-0, 1-0 MHC) and Alyssa Benson, Destiny Hirschauer, Cadence Gooch and Louise Rousset each had two RBIs.

Benson struck out 11 Spartans (0-5, 0-3 MHC) in three-plus innings of work.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 4, Morristown 0

At Morristown, Maryrose Felling improved to 3-0 at No. 1 singles for Triton Central with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sarah Essex.

Hallie Schweitzer defeated Abby Mendoza, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Neither team fielded a player at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Courtney Washburn and Lauren Grant topped Bri Flores and Remi Spicklemire, 6-0, 6-0.

And Olivia Reedy and Kaylynn Washburn swept Olivia Trlak and Ashlee Balinger, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Triton Central will compete in the Shelbyville Invitational Saturday. Morristown returns to action Monday at Hauser.

Trinity Lutheran 4, Southwestern 1

At Southwestern, the No. 1 doubles pairing of McKinley Correll and Lauren Blondell scored a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Carson Bowling and Kiley Zobel for the Spartans’ lone victory.

Trinity Lutheran lost just seven games in the other four matches.

At No. 2 doubles, Natalee Martinez and Emily Kelley defeated Southwestern’s Lily DeSpain and Kate Coffman, 6-1, 6-0.

Drew Hubbard bested Ella Rice at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Slobina Hall topped Mackenzie Belton, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

And Samantha Enzinger defeated Tori Burkhart, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Southwestern travels to Edinburgh Monday.

Girls track

Morristown 77, Southwestern 58, Edinburgh 15

At Morristown, Oakleigh Goedde collected first-place points in four individual events to lead the Yellow Jackets. Goedde won the long jump, high jump, 100-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Raegan Kleine added victories in the 800 and 1,600. Maggie Lutes won the 200 and 400.

In the field events, Kindall Dorsey won the shot put and discus.

Morristown also won the 3,200 relay with Kleine, Lutes, Grace McLaughlin and Katie Theobald.
