Prep Report: Golden Bears secure key HHC win at Class 3A, No. 1 Yorktown

On the strength of a pair of home runs from Kylee Edwards, Shelbyville coasted into the bottom of the seventh needing three outs to defeat Class 3A, No. 1 Yorktown Saturday at Yorktown Sports Park.

The Golden Bears’ defense faltered, though, and Yorktown scored four runs to keep the game going.

In the top of the ninth, Cheyenne Eads delivered a bases-clearing double to make it 8-5. Yorktown battled back again in the bottom of the ninth off Eads but could not produce the big hit it needed to secure the win.

In a week when Shelbyville faced three state-ranked opponents, it finished with two wins after an 8-7 victory in nine innings at Yorktown.

Eads earned the victory, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out 18 – a program record at Shelbyville. Of the seven runs Yorktown scored, only two were earned.

Caitlin LaFerney had 14 strikeouts in a complete-game performance for Yorktown (6-1, 1-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference). She allowed seven hits and six walks in the loss.
