Prep Report: Triton Central softball delivers first loss to Class 3A, No. 9 Beech Grove

Brylie Couch outdueled Malone Moore to deal Class 3A, No. 9 Beech Grove its first loss of the season.

The Triton Central sophomore notched 15 strikeouts and allowed just one run in a 2-1 victory Wednesday at Triton Central.

Madi Peterson had a solo home run for Triton Central (7-1, 2-0 ICC). Jayda McKee had a hit and scored TC’s only other run off Moore, the Coastal Carolina University commit.

Moore finished with 12 strikeouts in the loss for the Hornets (11-1, 2-1 ICC). Lillianna Jansen had three of the five Beech Grove hits.

Baseball

Pendleton Heights 12, Shelbyville 7

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, the visiting Arabians salvaged a split in the Hoosier Heritage Conference two-game series after scoring eight runs in the last two innings.

Shelbyville (6-6, 1-5 HHC) built a 5-4 lead on a pair of Caden Tackett home runs and a Dalton Jones solo shot.

Jones struggled on the mound in relief of Gavyn Fisher (five innings, five hits, four runs but only one earned run). The sophomore walked four Arabians and hit two more in a five-run sixth.

Alex Begley earned the win for Pendleton Heights (7-3, 4-2 HHC) with six innings of work, allowing eight hits and six runs.

Nate Gilmet had two hits and four runs batted in.

Shelbyville is off until Monday when it travels to Franklin Central (2-9).

Speedway 16, Triton Central 5

At Triton Central, the visiting Sparkplugs scored three runs in four separate innings following a 4-run first to sweep the Indiana Crossroads Conference two-game series. Speedway improved to 6-4 (6-0 ICC).

Triton Central (2-8, 2-4 ICC) had seven hits in the loss. Bryce Haney had two hits and two RBIs.

Kaleb Murphy was the most effective of five TC pitchers. He allowed one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings pitched.

Triton Central is home Saturday for a doubleheader against Eastern Hancock (3-8).

Girls tennis

Triton Central 4, Southwestern 1

At Southwestern, the visiting Tigers swept the singles matches to improve to 3-5 this season.

Maryrose Felling pushed her record to 5-0 this season at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ella Rice.

At No. 2 singles, Maddy Brown defeated Mackenzie Bolton, 6-4, 6-1.

And Olivia Reedy bested Tori Burkhart at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Southwestern’s lone win came at No. 1 doubles where McKinley Correll and Lauryn Blondell defeated Courtney Washburn and Lauren Grant, 6-1, 6-1.

TC completed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles from Kaylynn Washburn and Audrey Canter over Lily DeSpain and Kate Coffman.

Boys track

Triton Central 74, Hauser 55, Waldron 23

At Hauser, Triton Central took first place in nine events to seal the team victory.

Brayden Wilkens scored two wins in the 200 meters (24.2 seconds) and the long jump (20 feet, 5.5 inches).

Also winning events for TC were Ethan Cales (110 hurdles, 18.14), Brad Schultz (100, 11.65), Hadyn Ball (discus, 142-6), William Baugh (shot put, 44-4.25) and Zeke Robertson (300 hurdles, 49.49).

Triton Central won the 400 relay (47.45) and the 1,600 relay (3:59.09).

Will Larrison collected two event wins for Waldron. He took first place in the 800 (2:18.43) and the 1,600 (4:58.5).

Girls track

Triton Central 82, Waldron 32, Hauser 28

At Hauser, Triton Central won 11 events including all three relay races.

Maddy Brown finished first in the 200 (31.16), the high jump (4-10) and the long jump (13-6).

Hallie Schweitzer scored first-place points in the 1,600 (6:34.89) and the 3,200 (14:48.5).

Also winning events for Triton Central  Brynne Auckerman (800, 2:47.87), Mel Dodds (discus, 82-3) and Farah Coen (shot put, 27-10.25).

Waldron’s Lillian Lozier won the 100 hurdles in 19.64 and was second in the 300 hurdles (57.82).

Also for Waldron, Riley Price won the 400 in 1:10.4, placed second in the high jump (4-2) and third in the 100 (14.95). Alivia Fischer finished second in the discus (72-6).
