Two Shelbyville wrestlers qualify for girls semistate tournament

Two Shelbyville wrestlers advanced out of the Perry Meridian Girls Wrestling Regional Saturday.

Freshman Jessica Price and sophomore Ella Holmes each finished third at the regional to advance to the semistate round of competition.

Price (photo, left) went 3-1 at 100 pounds, scoring a third-period pin in her opening round match. She was defeated in the semifinals but returned to score two more pinfall victories – including a 56-second pin of Southport’s Ma’kayla Pardue in the third-place match to keep her season going.

Price is 10-3 this season.

Holmes (photo, center) received a bye into the round of 8 at 235 pounds and suffered a third-period pinfall defeat in her opening match. Holmes then pinned three straight opponents – including Greenfield-Central’s Keely Allen, who defeated her in the round of 8 – to secure a third-place finish.

Holmes is 10-4 this season.

Shelbyville sophomore Cora Flynn (photo, right) finished fifth at 120 pounds to earn an alternate position. She defeated Beech Grove’s Janessa Golder by pinfall in the fifth-place match.

Also competing for Shelbyville in the regional were Katelyn Wilson (105 pounds), Natalie Stickles (110), Sydney Ann Dudgeon (130) and Anna Shearer (155).

Girls wrestling is still considered an emerging sport by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.
