Prep Report: Golden Bears end five-game losing streak to Greensburg

With three players scoring in double digits, Shelbyville ended a five-game losing streak to Greensburg Saturday night at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

Damon Badgley hit a season-high six three-pointers to lead Shelbyville with 19 points. Caden Claxton made four 3s and finished with 17 points and Mar Nicholson added 15 to get the Golden Bears to 8-4.

The win was the first over the Pirates since Jan. 6, 2018.

Shelbyville trailed 11-8 after one quarter but outscored the Pirates 35-20 over the next two quarters to build a 43-31 lead.

Jack McKinsey scored 11 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter as Greensburg (8-4) tried to rally. McKinsey was the only Pirate to score in double figures in the loss.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team improved to 8-4 with a 62-30 victory Saturday.

The Golden Bears will go for a third-straight win Tuesday at a potential Sectional 14 opponent – Columbus East (3-6).

Girls basketball

Shelbyville 56, Yorktown 41

At Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville, the host Golden Bears outscored the visiting Tigers 19-5 in the third quarter to break open what was a 29-all tie at halftime.

Ella Johnson had six of her 14 points in the pivotal third quarter and five different Golden Bears scored in the period to build a 48-34 lead.

Ava Wilson finished with a game-high 21 points for Shelbyville in the Hoosier Heritage Conference contest. The Golden Bears have won four straight and improved to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the HHC standings.

Johnson also had 10 rebounds to go with her 14 points.

Lilly Sylvester led Yorktown (9-7, 2-2 HHC) with 13 points.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team improved to 16-1 with a 44-12 victory over Yorktown.

The Golden Bears are back in action Tuesday at Garrett Gymnasium against Rushville (7-11).

Guerin Catholic Invitational

Shelbyville dominated all five dual matches to capture the Guerin Catholic Invitational team title.

The Golden Bears defeated Indianapolis Scecina (65-12), Lapel (75-6), Brebeuf (84-0), Lafayette Central Catholic (80-0) and Guerin Catholic (78-5).
