Prep Report: Four area wrestlers earn runner-up finishes in conference championship meets

Triton Central produced three runner-up finishes in the Indiana Crossroads Conference Championships wrestling meet Saturday at Beech Grove High School.

Freshman Chance Uhls, senior Ayden Nufio and junior Dayne Bailey each placed second in their respective weight classes.

Uhls pinned Lutheran’s Wyatt Geminden in 61 seconds to reach the ICC championship match at 106 pounds where he lost to Monrovia’s Royce Malone.

At 113 pounds, Nufio defeated Beech Grove’s Michael Stacy and Lutheran’s Caleb Morrow to reach the championship round. Monrovia’s Gavin Ash defeated Nufio to claim the title.

Bailey secured two pinfall victories at 150 pounds to get into the championship match. He was defeated 9-1 by Cascade’s Carter Hutchison.

Triton Central also had four wrestlers win third-place matches. They were Anthony Toon (120 pounds), Liam Thompson (132), Braxton Zimmerman (138) and Hunter Franklin (157).

Cascade won the team title for the third straight season but it did not come easy. The Cadets totaled 207 points to hold off Speedway (205.5), Beech Grove (202) and Monrovia (191).

Triton Central finished fifth with 177 points.

Hoosier Heritage Conference Championships

At Pendleton Heights Saturday, Shelbyville advance one wrestler into the championship round.

Brady Bryant, a sophomore, defeated Delta’s Zeke Witter in the opening match at 150 pounds. Bryant then pinned New Castle’s Darin Reynolds in the second period to qualify for the championship match at his weight class.

In the finale, New Palestine’s Elijah Alonso defeated Bryant, 8-1.

Two Shelbyville wrestlers won third-place matches.

At 113 pounds, freshman Tripp Garner defeated New Castle’s Carson Bell to finish third on the podium.

Junior Brayden Schultz topped Pendleton Heights’ Chris Crank, 8-2, to also finish third at 190 pounds.

Delta captured the HHC team title with 207.5 points. New Palestine followed with 191 points to finish ahead of Greenfield-Central (189), Pendleton Heights (154), Mt. Vernon (145), New Castle (110), Shelbyville (104) and Yorktown (101).

Girls Wrestling State Finals

Shelbyville’s Ella Holmes suffered a first-period pinfall loss to Harrison’s Erin Cauble Friday in the 235-pound bracket of the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Finals in Kokomo.
