Prep Report: Golden Bears celebrate Senior Night with win over Whiteland

Shelbyville’s girls basketball program celebrated its five seniors then blitzed a potential Sectional 14 opponent.

On Wednesday at Garrett Gymnasium, the Golden Bears raced out to a 21-4 advantage after one quarter against Whiteland and never looked back. Ava Wilson scored a game-high 23 points on her Senior Night to lead Shelbyville to a 60-35 victory.

Wilson, Lilly Marshall, Ellie Simpson, Ella Johnson and Lilly Johnson have one more home game in Garrett Gymnasium – Saturday against Delta (10-8) – before finishing the regular-season schedule Tuesday at East Central.

Shelbyville has won six of its last seven games to improve to 13-7.

Ella Johnson scored all seven of her points against the Warriors Wednesday in the first quarter. Wilson had 11 points in the second quarter as the lead grew to 35-12.

Ellie Keller hit a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter on the way to an 11-point performance and the Golden Bears led by 29 going into the final quarter.

Sophia Dyer topped Whiteland (9-10) with 17 points.

Shelbyville’s junior varsity improved to 19-1 this season with a 41-32 victory.

Girls basketball

Morristown 71, Greenwood Christian 39

At Greenwood Christian, Morristown had three players score in double digits and three more combine for 21 points to run away from the Cougars (4-14).

Emma Nelson hit three 3s to lead the Yellow Jackets (8-12) with 18 points. She also had four rebounds and five steals.

Jayla Keithley filled the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alexia Rogers added 11 points.

Danika Rutledge followed with nine points, three rebounds and four assists and Olivia Rude and Nevaeh Cox each scored six points.

Morristown led 31-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 50-30 after three quarters. The 71 points was a season high for the Yellow Jackets, who travel to Hauser (6-15) tonight.

Swimming

Shelbyville’s Will Rife and Riley Everette each won two individual events and were part of a winning relay team in Tuesday’s dual meet at Greenwood.

Rife, a senior, took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Everette, a sophomore, touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Rife teamed with Everett Stegemiller, Brody Jeanette and Andrew Duffy to score first-place points in the 400 freestyle relay.

Everette joined with Hailey Maulden, Miriam Garringer and Paige Bohman to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Also winning events for Shelbyville were Bohman (100 freestyle), Garringer (100 backstroke) and Jeanette (100 breaststroke).

Greenwood won the boys dual meet, 92-64, and the girls dual meet, 100-56.
