Morristown honoring Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2024 Saturday

Morristown High School will add two women and the 1951 cross country team to its Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday night in conjunction with the boys basketball game against Anderson Prep.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2024 includes track and field athlete Lauri Harris (Class of 1982), gymnast Katie Schneider (Class of 1996) and the seven-member 1951 cross country team that finished sixth at the state championship meet. The roster consisted of Don Wortman, Paul Goble, Tom Pruitt, Gaylord Cole, Hubert Blackford, Donald Kuhn and James Knopp.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place Saturday between the junior varsity and varsity games. The JV game tips off at 6 p.m.

Harris earned 12 varsity letters during her Morristown career in track and field, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and cheerleading. She still holds the school track and field records in the 100-meter dash (11.9 seconds) and 200 meters (26.4 seconds).

Upon graduation, Harris attended Indiana University and graduated in 1986 with a degree in Health Information. In 2015, she earned her master’s degree from IU in Health Informatics.

Harris also was a member of the marching band at Morristown and served as class president.

Schneider was a four-year gymnast for Morristown and qualified for the IHSAA State Finals in 1996. She was a three-year regional qualifier and just missed the state finals cut in the balance beam her senior year by .2 of a point.

Due to an injury, Schneider was added to the State Finals field in the balance beam where she placed 27th overall out of 38 competitors.

Morristown’s 1951 cross country team placed sixth in the State Finals that year behind Anderson, University (Bloomington), Fort Wayne North, Indianapolis Shortridge and Indianapolis Tech – all much larger schools.

Paul Goble finished eighth in the individual standings. Wortman placed 25th ahead of Pruitt (31st), Cole (48th), Blackford (94th), Kuhn (108th) and Knopp (111th).

Morristown’s cross country team was formed in 1950. Goble won the East Central Conference Meet that year and the following two years. He finished 11th in the 1950 state meet.

Goble was inducted into the Morristown Hall of Fame in 2018 as part of the first class inducted.
