Waldron varsity basketball coach steps down midseason

David Corder’s tenure as Waldron High School’s boys basketball coach has ended after 10 games.

Corder (photo) resigned as the school’s varsity basketball coach Friday confirmed Waldron athletic director Brad Peterson.

John Shaw has been named interim head coach and he led the Mohawks Saturday in a 56-38 loss at Bethesda Christian. Jeb Stewart and Tommy Coy will serve as Shaw’s assistant coaches.

Corder returned to Indiana after amassing 283 career wins and eight state tournament appearances in Georgia and South Carolina. He led three different high schools to 20-win seasons.

While stepping aside as Waldron head coach, Corder will continue teaching English at the high school.

“We wish him well. He is still teaching at the high school,” said Peterson. “He does a great job in the classroom. He is very professional. We are happy he is staying on to finish the year as an English teacher.”

The Mohawks were 4-6 under Corder, losing their first three games by a combined 18 points before winning four straight over programs with a combined three wins. Waldron then lost its next three games to Tri-Central (65-35), Triton Central in the semifinal round of the Shelby County Tournament, 42-35, and Jac-Cen-Del (63-42).

On Saturday at Bethesda Christian, Jack Fischer led the Mohawks (4-7) with 11 points and three rebounds. Keith Settles had eight points and four rebounds. Lucas Shaw finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Bethesda Christian won its third straight to improve to 8-7.

Waldron is home Friday to face Southwestern (0-12) then travels to Seven Oaks Classical School (1-13) Saturday.
