Prep Report: Southwestern earns first win of season over Indianapolis Herron

Southwestern built a double-digit lead early Saturday night against visiting Indianapolis Herron and cruised to its first victory of the season, 83-69.

Ben Kahler scored 25 points for Southwestern (1-13), who produced a season-high point total in the win. Avery Dennison followed with 21 points and Mitchell Clements scored a career-high 19 points. Carter Snepp added 14 points.

Jaden Parker scored a game-high 26 points for the Achaeans (1-15). Isreal Cozart (18 points) and Ashu Price (15) also reached double digits.

Southwestern won the junior varsity game, 53-43. Cecil Newton led the Spartans with 21 points.

Southwestern hosts Hauser (12-4, 4-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference) Thursday.

Boys basketball

Triton Central 48, Eastern Hancock 28

At Eastern Hancock, the visiting Tigers took a double-digit lead after the first quarter Saturday and rolled to a win over a potential Sectional 42 opponent.

Eli Sego scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the opening eight minutes to get the Tigers (13-4) a 17-6 lead. Silas Blair hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter and finished with 11 points.

Kayden Ruble had a team-high 13 points for Eastern Hancock (7-8).

Of the five teams in Sectional 42, Triton Central is the only team with more than seven wins.

Edinburgh 72, Morristown 54

At Morristown Friday, Connor Ramey made five 3s and finished with a game-high 30 points to lead the Lancers to the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

The Lancers (8-7, 2-3 MHC) built a 25-15 halftime advantage then scored 24 third-quarter points to pull away for the win.

Cade Mahin led Morristown (2-13, 0-5 MHC) with 11 points and Dalton McMichael sank three 3s and finished with 10 points.

On Saturday, Morristown traveled to New Castle and suffered a 67-26 loss to the Trojans (8-9).

Morristown hits the road again Saturday for an afternoon game at Alexandria (8-8).

Waldron 58, Southwestern 46

At Waldron Friday, the visiting Spartans had four players score in double figures but it was not enough to get the MHC victory.

Keith Settles scored a game-high 21 points for Waldron and Lucas Shaw finished with 18 to end the Mohawks’ 4-game losing streak.

Avery Dennison led Southwestern (0-13, 0-2 MHC) with 12 points. Ben Kahler and Mitchell Clements each had 11 points and Carter Snepp scored 10.

On Saturday, Waldron traveled to Ellettsville and defeated Seven Oaks Classical School, 83-22. The Firehawks dropped to 2-14.

Waldron (6-7, 2-1 MHC) returns to action Thursday at North Decatur (10-8, 3-1 MHC).

Triton Central 41, Indianapolis Scecina 36

At Triton Central Friday, Eli Sego scored a game-high 20 points to keep the Tigers atop the Indiana Crossroads Conference standings.

Silas Blair finished with 11 points and Triton Central improved to 12-4 (3-0 ICC).

Clifford Brown led Scecina (4-12, 0-3 ICC) with 17 points.

Girls basketball

Southwestern 49, Greenwood Christian 36

At Greenwood Christian, Southwestern used a strong third-quarter performance to deal the Cougars their 10th-straight loss.

Greenwood Christian led 23-19 at halftime but the Spartans scored 17 points in the third quarter to regain the lead then hit a pair of 3s and 7-of-12 free throws in the final quarter to seal their third win in their last four games.

Tanna Tatlock led Southwestern with 19 points. Claire Utley finished with nine points. The Spartans made 30-of-45 free throw attempts in the game.

Kate Reed and Sydney Waldron topped Greenwood Christian (4-17) with 12 points apiece.

Southwestern is the host site for Class A, Sectional 60. The Spartans (3-19) face No. 11 Oldenburg Academy (17-4) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Waldron 62, Milan 45

At Waldron, Grace Fischer scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half to help the Mohawks close out the regular-season schedule with a win over the Indians.

Alyssa Benson hit three 3s on the way to 14 points and had seven assists. Fischer also had 14 rebounds and five steals.

Kaiya Rinear led Milan (4-18) with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Waldron (8-13) will face Morristown (10-13) at the Southwestern Sectional Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Triton Central 49, Beech Grove 23

At Beech Grove, Class 2A, No. 15 Triton Central held the Hornets scoreless in the fourth quarter and claimed the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship with a 7-0 record.

Maryrose Felling scored a game-high 20 points for Triton Central (17-6). Quinn King and Brooklyn Bailey each had eight points.

Mylee Boling scored 11 points for Beech Grove (14-8, 4-3 ICC).

Triton Central travels to Indianapolis Scecina Friday for a Class 2A, Sectional 42 semifinal showdown with No. 3 Eastern Hancock (21-1).

Morristown 58, Indianapolis Lutheran 43

At Morristown, the Yellow Jackets raced out to a 40-17 lead by halftime and closed out its regular-season schedule with a 15-point victory.

The Saints dropped to 12-9.

Morristown (10-13) will battle Waldron (8-13) Wednesday at the Southwestern Sectional.
