Morristown sophomore qualifies for gymnastics regional

Morristown sophomore Remi Spicklemire was the only Shelby County gymnast to advance out of Saturday’s Connersville Sectional.

Spicklemire (photo, third from right) finished sixth in the balance beam competition with a score of 8.25 which will allow her to compete Friday in the Franklin Central Regional that will feature top-six finishers from the Connersville and Franklin Central Sectionals.

Southwestern junior Mikayla Claiborne finished seventh on the balance beam (8.20) and eighth on the uneven bars (7.45).

Claiborne placed 10th in the all-around competition with a 31.675. Spicklemire was 11th at 31.625.

The top-six finishers in each of the four individual events and the all-around competition advanced out the Connersville Sectional. The top three teams also advanced to the regional event.

New Palestine captured the sectional title by .05 points over Connersville, 100.575-to-100.525. Also advancing was New Castle (96.225).

Shelbyville finished sixth in the team standings at 85.725. Morristown was seventh (80.90).

Shelbyville freshman Lilli Conway had a top-10 finish on the uneven bars with a 7.4. She also placed 10th in the vault (8.575).

Shelbyville’s Haylee Barnes finished tied for 11th with Spicklemire in the vault (8.55).
