Prep Report: Morristown gymnast qualifies for IHSAA State Finals

With a season-best score on the balance beam Friday at the Franklin Central Regional, Remi Spicklemire became the first Morristown gymnast to qualify for the IHSAA State Finals since 2008.

Spicklemire’s routine scored 9.05 to earn her a fourth-place finish and a berth in the state championship meet. The top six finishers in each event advanced Friday from the regional competition.

Franklin Central’s Austyn Dykes won the balance beam competition with a 9.75. Martinsville’s Gabby Grubb (9.225) and Bloomington North’s Sofia Garcia (9.15) finished second and third, respectively, ahead of Spicklemire. Also qualifying for the state finals were Bloomington South’s Maddie Kawanishi (8.95) and Columbus North’s Reese Euler (8.925).

The IHSAA State Finals begin Saturday at 11 a.m. at Worthen Arena on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie.

Oldenburg Academy 58, Morristown 53

Morristown fell behind 20-10 after one quarter but dug in and fought till the end before finally being eliminated from the sectional tournament.

Connor Miles and Henry Wanstrath combined for 16 points in the opening quarter and had 16 points in the final quarter to finally fend off the Yellow Jackets.

Wanstrath had a game-high 22 points and Miles finished with 21 to get the Twisters into the Class A, Sectional 60 championship game against Jac-Cen-Del.

Kellen Crim made five three-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points for Morristown (5-19). Kane Snyder had 10 points and Colin Kieninger added eight.

In the sectional championship Saturday, Oldenburg Academy defeated Jac-Cen-Del, 47-36. The Twisters (13-11) will face No. 13 Greenwood Christian (17-7) this Saturday at 4 p.m. in the regional championship game at Martinsville High School.
