Collegiate Update: IU South Bend captures second-straight CCAC Tournament title

Tenleigh Phelps scored 30 points and collected eight rebounds Saturday to lead Indiana University South Bend to a 91-87 victory over Olivet Nazarene University in the championship game of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Titans improved to 29-1 and earned their second-straight CCAC tournament title. Next up for IU South Bend is the NAIA National Tournament. The pairings for the tournament will be announced at 8 p.m. Thursday.

 

 

The Titans opened the conference tournament with a 77-60 win over St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday. Phelps, a Triton Central graduate, had 25 points, four rebounds and four assists.

 

 

Lizzie Graham, also a Triton Central graduate, did not score for IU South Bend in limited minutes.

On Thursday, the Titans defeated IU Northwest, 77-66. Phelps had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

 

 

Brooke Lipperd

The Shelbyville graduate delivered a grand slam Saturday for Franklin College that broke a 2-2 tie with Wilmington. The home run was the first for her collegiate career and Franklin went on to defeat the Quakers, 10-7, to improve to 7-1 this season.

 

 

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate hit a pair of home runs as Mississippi State went 6-0 in the Bulldog Invitational in Starkville, Miss.

Edwards hit a grand slam in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Troy. She also had a double and turned two unassisted double plays from her shortstop position.

On Sunday, Edwards had a two-run home run in a 15-0 win over Alcorn State.

 

 

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate had hits in four games for Kentucky in the Queen City Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hamilton had a run-scoring double Saturday in Kentucky’s 8-0 win over Minnesota. She also had a single and scored a run in a 4-3 loss to Charlotte.

On Sunday, Hamilton had a single in a 10-8 loss to Fordham and a single in an 8-1 win over North Carolina Wilmington.

 

 

Katie Mathies

The Shelbyville graduate had two doubles and scored a run Sunday in DePauw softball’s 7-1 loss to Case Western Reserve in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia.

Mathies had a home run Thursday in DePauw’s season-opening loss to Central College, 10-9 in 10 innings. She also had a hit and scored a run Saturday in a 10-5 loss to Virginia Wesleyan.

DePauw finished the season-opening invitational 1-4.

 

 

Grant Kessler

The Morristown graduate made his collegiate debut Sunday in Mount St. Joseph’s 11-7 loss to Ohio Wesleyan in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Kessler pitched in relief for the Lions and allowed three hits and one run before securing the final out of the top of the ninth inning.

 

 

Abby Eberhardt

The Triton Central graduate had a home run and drove in two runs Saturday in Manchester softball’s 21-0 win over Berea.

Eberhardt had a sacrifice fly RBI in Manchester’s game one 12-0 win over Berea.

 

 

Kristen Whitney

The Morristown graduate made her collegiate debut for Wilmington College (Ohio) Saturday in a pair of losses at Franklin College.

Whitney was inserted into game one as a pinch runner but did not score. Franklin College defeated the Quakers, 13-5.

In game two, Whitney appeared in a pinch-hit role in a 10-7 loss.

 

 

Morgan Stieneker and Erica Henry

Stieneker, a Shelbyville graduate, had three hits in a pair of losses for Indiana University Columbus Friday at Indiana Wesleyan.

Henry was the starting pitcher for IU Columbus and took the loss in game one that ended 21-1.

Henry pitched in relief in game two and had a single at the plate in a 10-2 loss.

 

 

Cory Taylor

The Shelbyville graduate had a triple, a home run and drove in two runs Saturday in Eastern Michigan’s 8-4 loss at Houston Christian.

In the four-game series opener Thursday, Taylor had a triple, two walks and a stolen base in a 14-4 victory.

The Eagles were swept in Saturday’s doubleheader, 6-5 and 4-0.

Eastern Michigan is 3-8 this season.

 

 

Maya Chandler

The Triton Central graduate scored seven points, collected six rebounds and had three assists, two steals and one blocked shot for SMU Wednesday in an 88-84 overtime win at Wichita State.

With her first point in the game, Chandler reached 1,000 career points.

On Saturday, Chandler finished with 11 points, one rebound, one steal and one block in SMU’s 91-73 loss at Tulsa.

SMU is 14-14 this season.

 

 

Olivia Faust

The Triton Central graduate had two points, three rebounds and one block Friday in Marian’s 107-60 semifinal round win over St. Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League Tournament.

The Knights are 29-1 this season.

Marian battles Indiana Wesleyan tonight in the tournament championship game.

 

 

Drake Moore

The Morristown graduate scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists and one steal Friday in Oakland City’s 74-62 loss to Alice Lloyd College in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional.

Oakland City finished the season 7-22.
